I too am planning on blogging this story. The multi-ethnic putatively Lithuanian church on Broome and Varick, Our Lady of Vilnius, was closed and locked by the Archdiocese on February 26, 2007. It was not one of the churches named for closure under the much publicized realignment. The church was emptied of all contents, a mural that could not be removed was painted over, asbestos abatement was in progress and rodent extermination performed. At this point the archdiocese denied any intent to demolish. Three months ago, they applied for a demolition permit. We are still struggling to preserve the building and have our community and gathering place restored to us. I am happy to find your blog. I don't find people that share my sensibilities too often. I have a church blog, Our Lady of Vilnius, NYC. It focusses mainly on the church and it's members, but I very well understand the larger forces at work in its demise.
